Pokemon Go: How to power level up your Trainer fast trick!

Okay so for those of you still wondering how people are getting insanely high CP Pokemon, I’ll clue you into what I know so far from experience and what I’ve heard from other people, Firstly, this game is an experience race, meaning, most of the Pokemon you have right now, you won’t be keeping. There are exceptions to this for example, Pokemon with a lower drop rate in your area, you may want to keep for collectible reasons. However, assuming your primary goal is to be the big bad king of a gym, then this guide applies to you so keep reading!

The concept is pretty basic: Don’t spend any Stardust and don’t evolve anything. This is clearly a temporary restriction, but if you want to maximize your results at or near the end game, you’d be best to follow this advice. Firstly, spending Stardust to power up your Pokemon is essentially like investing into an abyss. Especially when your trainer level is below 20. You might do it in order to capture a gym or for bragging rights, but what exactly are you getting from that gym? 10 Pokecoins and 500 Stardust per day approximately. That isn’t really all that much and you don’t need to have a high level Pokemon in order to get that bonus. If you drive around, you’ll likely find a gym which has just changed colors and you can inject yourself into one of the free open spots. This allows you to get your bonus every day, even if you get kicked right back out.

When you spend your Stardust to power up, you are limited primarily by  your trainer level. As you go up, you’ll be able to power up more. But at the same time, as you level up, you’ll be able to catch wild Pokemon which are more or less already powered up, no Stardust investment necessary. So based on this fact alone, spending Stardust under level 20 is really only something you should do if you want instant gratification. There are exceptions to this rule, like for those of you who live in a rural area, however this guide will assume that leveling up your trainer is your primary goal.

So why do I keep saying level 20? Its not the cap, which has recently been determined to be set at 40 currently(read: Level Cap Datamined) but it is the point where you’ll start to see diminishing returns for your hard work. Here is an image which visualizes this XP curve:

As you can see, once you hit level 20, the XP requirement jumps a lot for level 21, by double. The requirement for level 20 is 25,000 XP. The requirement for level 21 is 50,000. The chart above and below were sourced from Reddit which helps illustrate the requirements as well as the rewards for each level. Keep in mind, once you unlock an item, you’ll start getting them at Pokestops.

So the question is, how do I get to level 20+ quickly? There are a couple different methods to do this. The first one is to preserve all your Pokemon candies. As stated at the beginning of the article, don’t spend your candy, save them! The reasoning for this is because you get 500 xp every time you evolve a Pokemon, regardless if you’ve evolved that particular Pokemon before or not. So if you have 120 Pidgey candies, and since the cost to evolve from Pidgey to Pidgeotto is just 12, then you can evolve 10 Pidgeys. So gather up 10 Pidgeys if you don’t have them already, pop a Lucky Egg and evolve each Pidgey into a Pidgeotto. That is 1000 XP per evolution. You may think catching Pidgeys is a chore, but each Pidget accounts for 4 Pidgey Candies once transferred to the professor. Catch 3 pidgeys and you’ve made an extra 500-1000 XP.

The second method does not require any items, when done correctly. Not even Pokeballs, so you may do this while you’re out of Pokeballs, Lures or incense or even waiting for a stockpile of candies. What you do is you find a gym that has an open slot and place in a CP10 Pidgey or Rattata. And then train against that Pokemon with another CP10 Pokemon that has Scratch or Mud Shot. You don’t have to use Pidgey or Rattata, just ensure that you are able to kill it with just a couple hit so you don’t take any damage. Even if you get hit once or twice, the attacker will ignore 1 or 2 hits at the beginning of every battle. So when you leave and come back, you’ll be at full health again. Don’t forget to immediately leave the gym before the next opponent attacks you. If you take damage, then you’ll be spending potions left and right which makes this unsustainable. If you use a CP10 attacker and CP10 defender, you’ll get 50 XP even when you abandon the fight after winning the first match. Your gym will get prestige as an added bonus. If you have a Lucky Egg activated, this will be 100 XP per training match, which only takes 5-10 seconds. If you have multiple slots open and someone to go with you to the gym, stick multiple CP10 defenders in there and this way you don’t have to exit so soon. But be careful, someone is likely to come by and want to take advantage of the low level gym so it may be best to have someone anchor the gym with a higher CP Pokemon.

Here is a good video which demonstrates this method but while using two phones logged into the same account to battle continuously without any down time!

I hope this helps someone, what level is your trainer? Do you have a different method for leveling up fast? Tell us in the comments below or click the Discuss in Forums link!

After playing the game for a while you hardly ever see CP10 Pokémon anymore so you pretty much have to make a new account to try and get those low level ones. I come across a CP10 almost never
